Origins and names

This distinctive mushroom was first documented in China and Japan around 2,000 years ago.

It carries an unusual number of names. In China it is hou tou gu. In Japan it is yamabushitake, after the Yamabushi monks. Elsewhere it is called hedgehog mushroom, pom pom mushroom, or monkey head mushroom. As a culinary mushroom its texture is often compared to crab or lobster.
