How to Infuse Superfoods into Your Breakfast Routine

How to Infuse Superfoods into Your Breakfast Routine

It’s the most important meal of the day. Well, that’s what we’ve been told ever since we were kids. And there is most certainly a reason for this.

Breakfast, from its name itself, breaks the fasting period that happens overnight.

Breakfast is important because it replenishes your supply of glucose, which serves to boost your energy levels and alertness, also providing you with other essential nutrients required for good health and well-being throughout the day.

So, how can you make the most of this meal? Keep reading to find out.

Make your breakfast even better with superfoods

Superfoods are foods that make you feel great, live great, and even look great.

They pack that extra nutrient punch you need to live a longer, healthier life.

Foods that are considered to be superfoods, are those that are absolute powerhouses in the nutrient space. They provide major levels of antioxidants, phytochemicals, vitamins, and minerals. And they provide these nutritional benefits in levels significantly higher than other foods.

The high vitamin and mineral content found in superfoods can help your body ward off diseases to keep you healthier. When incorporated into your breakfast routine, these foods start you off for the day promoting good overall health, boosting energy, and preventing digestive problems.

However, although superfoods are naturally good for your health and provide you with a hefty dose of nutrients, eating superfoods alone does not make up a proper diet. Superfoods should be added to a well-balanced diet; they are not meant to entirely replace it.

A healthy breakfast ideally contains whole grains (bagels, cereal, muffins), lean protein (eggs, legumes, nuts), low-fat dairy (milk, yoghurt, cheese), and fruits and vegetables. Together with these, it’s super easy to incorporate a few superfoods, whether in food, powder, or capsule form, into your healthy breakfast menu.

Add Superfoods into Your Breakfast

Below we’ve put together some amazing recipes that are fun and easy to make, in which superfoods are already infused for the energy kickstart that you need for a fantastic start of the day!

The best part about these recipes is that there are so many variations that can be made, so you won’t ever get bored of playing around and discovering what combinations you like best.

Berry Acai Bowl Recipe

All you’ll need to make this breakfast bowl is a cup of frozen berries, half a frozen banana, half an avocado, a handful of mango chunks, and 1/2 cup of almond milk and acai powder.

Blend everything and serve in a bowl, then top with your favourite berries, superfoods, and granola.

This recipe can be made with endless different variations, meaning you can have it every day with a varied set of berries, fruits, or plant-based milk, based on your preference – and you’ll probably be able to have a different type every day.

Golden Milk Oatmeal with Pepita Brittle

This recipe calls for turmeric, but you can always swap it out for curcumin or anything else if you’d like! Such superfoods are a bit of an acquired taste, so feel free to dress it up with maple syrup, honey, or cinnamon until you find the flavours that you like.

For the brittle part of the recipe, you add in pepitas, chia seeds, pistachios (or your choice of nuts), chia seeds, black sesame seeds, coconut oil, maple syrup, and sea salt.

Then for the oatmeal, you shall make use of full-fat coconut milk, curcumin (or turmeric), cinnamon, ginger, and of course rolled oats.

This one takes a bit of labour, as you toss the brittle ingredients together in a bowl and then onto a parchment-lined baking sheet before roasting in the oven. Then in a medium saucepan, you combine the oatmeal ingredients and cook until the liquid is absorbed, for about ten to fifteen minutes.

The customisation you can do with this recipe is incredible, so if you have favourite seeds or nuts, you can add in them in in quantities that suit you. The brittle part of this recipe will also keep for a fair while, so keep in an air-tight container and enjoy whenever you like – it even makes an awesome snack.

And to add a little more superfood punch to this one, you could add hemp seeds to the mix – learn more about hemps seeds here.

Maqui Berry Buckwheat Breakfast Pudding

The maqui berry is native to Chile in South America and has been harvested by Chileans for thousands of years. Using it for various health benefits and because it has a delicious flavour reminiscent of blackberries and cherries.

So, you can make the most of it in your breakfast by creating a delightful breakfast pudding.

Relatively simple to prepare, you’ll need a cup of buckwheat groats (the hulled seed of the buckwheat plant) that’s been soaked overnight, 2 tablespoons of maqui powder (you can also adjust based on your taste preferences), a banana, ½ cup of almond milk, water, or preferred plant-based milk), and maple syrup. The buckwheat should be drained and rinsed well. This makes 4 servings.

In a blender or food processor, blend the ingredients together until smooth. You may need to do in batches depending on the size and power of your blender or food processor.

Serve in a bowl or glass, and top with seeds, nuts, berries, or anything you like!

Almond Matcha Superfood Smoothie

This matcha smoothie, made with almond milk and frozen fruit, is chock full of nutrient-loaded superfoods, perfect for a delectable breakfast to start the day!

To make a serve of this one you will need:

¾ cup of plant-based milk

½ cup of baby kale

1/3 cup of frozen pineapple (helps to thicken and cool your smoothie)

¼ cup of frozen mango

½ of a frozen banana

1 tbs of almond butter (or nut butter of your preference)

1 tsp of chia seeds

1 tsp of match green tea powder

Optional: a small dash of vanilla extract

Combine all your ingredients in a blender and put on high until the consistency is smooth. Make sure to serve and consume immediately.

Like the other recipes we’ve mentioned, this one can be adjusted to suit your tastes and what you have on hand. If you’re not used to matcha powder, it can be a strong taste at first, so make sure you add in smaller amounts and adjust accordingly!
