If you're out in China, Korea or Russia, you might see the Schisandra berry plant with its woody vines, green foliage, pink flowers, and red berries. The Schisandra berry, scientifically known as Schisandra Chinesis extract, is safe to consume and can be eaten by capsule, raw, fruit extract or powder. Schisandra berries contain antioxidants, vitamins, chromium, phosphorus, magnesium, silica, phytochemicals, beneficial fats, and acids. Besides the vitamins and minerals, this berry extract also contains lignans called gamma-schizandrin, schizandrol, gamma-schizandrin, schizandrin, and deoxyschizandrin.
When you taste the Schisandra berry, you'll discover five distinct flavor properties:
- Bitter
- Sweet
- Sour
- Salty
- Hot
Types Of Schisandra
Some of the most potent types of schizandra berries are from Northern China and regions near the Changbai Mountains. The plant, however, adapts well to a variety of other climate zones.
- Dried Schisandra berries - The most common way to prepare teas is from dried Schisandra berries.
- Schisandra powders - Fine or coarse powders are usually prepared from straight ground berries but are occasionally produced using a freeze-drying process.
- Powdered hot water Schisandra berry extracts - Schisandra extracts are usually made by spray-drying a concentrated tea solution into a powder form, sold in bulk, encapsulated or compressed into tablets.
- Liquid solutions or tinctures - Created from tea concentrates or alcohol-infused solutions.
- Fresh Schisandra berries - Can be pressed to make juice and "schizandra berry wine" or dried for later use.
Traditional methods of using Schisandra include:
- Mixing the dried fruit Schisandra extract in water to create a tincture
- Eating up to three grams a day of powdered Schisandra fruit or fruit extract
- Consuming one to three grams daily of Schisandra capsules
- Schisandra teas, tonic or wine. You can make your own by three grams in hot water for 40–60 minutes before drinking. Try adding other supportive herbs, including cinnamon, licorice root, ginger or turmeric
